TAMA-Alice Stella Tomas, age 87, of Tama, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at her home in Tama under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 20, 2009 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 3-6
PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service at 6 PM.
Alice was born on August 25, 1921, in rural Tama County, the daughter of Joseph and Stella (Vitosvky) Kacer.
On September 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to William A. Tomas at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama. She farmed with her husband northeast of Toledo for eight years before moving to a farm south of Chelsea, where they farmed for another eight years. In 1965, they moved to a farm near LaPorte City where they farmed for twenty years before moving to Tama. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. Alice loved fishing, playing cards and making kolaches. She was a die hard Cubs Fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, William in 2001; a son, William Joseph; six brothers, Joe, Frank, Lester, Charles, Louis, and Fred Kacer; and two sisters, Mary Betz and Ruth Titcomb.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane (Bernard) Knepper of Dyersville; one son, Don (Allison) Tomas of Aledo, TX; five grandchildren, Joe Knepper of Tulsa, OK, Lora (Chris) Vest of Ankeny, Merrill Tomas of Dallas, TX, and Emily and Abigail Tomas of Aledo, TX; one sister, Sylvia Nekola of Tama; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
