Obituary

TAMA-Andrew Roberts, age 70, of Tama, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at his home on the Meskwaki Settlement under the care of Iowa Hospice following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Traditional Graveside Services will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery on the Settlement in rural Tama with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker. A Traditional Wake was held on Saturday evening at the Native American Drum Dance Roundhouse on the Settlement.
Andrew Roberts was born on September 7, 1937, in Toledo, Iowa, the son of Una Roberts.
He graduated from high school from Haskell Institute in Kansas. He graduated college from Temple University, and received his Masters of Public Health from U.C. Berkeley. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
Andrew was a member of the Wolf Clan. He enjoyed making new friends, learning Spanish and spending time with his grandson, Evan.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Una Roberts; his son, Jason Andrew Roberts; one sister, Darlene Roberts; five brothers, Ernest, Chester, Terry, Ronnie, and Douglas Roberts.
Survivors include one daughter, Jessica (Brent) Nelson of Toledo; one son, Nick Buffalo of Tama; one grandson, Evan Nelson of Tama; his adopted mother, Agnes Shuckahosee; his siblings, Dean Whitebreast of Tama, Leo Morgan of Tama, Donna Roberts of Denver, CO, Nora Roberts Chavez of Denver, CO, and Imogene Haskin of Denver, CO; one uncle, Isaac Roberts of Tama; his adopted siblings, Raymond Slick Jr. of Tama, Darrell Wanatee of Tama, David Old Bear of Tama, Chloe Young Bear of Tama, and Gaylord Walker of Tama; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
