Obituary

Anna Katherine (Kunch) Smith, 89, of Toledo, was born on February 15, 1935, in her country home near Clutier, Iowa. She was the daughter of William and Emma (Chaska) Kunch. Anna passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown after a very short illness. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo with Pastor Clint Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Anna worked as a waitress in her high school days at Dick's Restaurant. She graduated from Toledo High School. In her adult years, she worked at the Tama County Sheriff's office and the Iowa State Juvenile Home in Toledo. In 1995, she received the (STAR) Governor State Top Achievement Recognition Award. At the Juvenile Home, she was the Superintendent's secretary and then given the Administrative Duty Superintendent position and worked with other management personnel.

Anna was united in marriage to James W. Smith in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They resided in Toledo, Iowa their entire fifty-five years of marriage until James passed away on September 24, 2008.

Anna was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she held several offices. She also was Mother Advisor for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She was a member of the Daughter of the Nile. Also, a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. She contributed to the STC Dollars for Scholars and St. Jude's Hospital for children. She enjoyed playing bridge with her card club, flowers and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son, James H. (Nancy) Smith II of Toledo; three grandsons, Bradley James Smith of Toledo, Jared Steven (Tania) Smith of Ely, and James Joshua (Tyne) Smith of Oskaloosa; also, seven great grandchildren, Braden James, Gavin Timothy, Alivia Rae, Mason Steven, James Lane, Anna Joe and Cristy Kathleen Smith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, James; brothers, William, Louis, Cyril, James, Harry; and sisters, Albie (3 ½ years), Mary Kerkman and Lucille Plum.

A memorial of the Shriners Children Hospital and the Toledo Police Department has been established.
