Barbara Sue Keahna, 82, a resident of Westbrook Acres Care Center in Gladbrook, formerly of Tama, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Morgan Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Michael Keahna as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Monday evening at the Fox Clan Ceremonial Building, on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.
Barbara was born on October 26, 1933, at home on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Columbus and Esther (Youngbear) Keahna. She graduated from Tama High School and attended Haskell Junior College. She was formerly the executive secretary for the Sac and Fox Tribe. Barbara loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandson. She enjoyed going to pow-wows and listening to Indian music. Barbara also liked playing bingo and going bowling.
Survivors include her daughter, Jackie Keahna of Marshalltown; three grandchildren, Gabrielle Keahna, Trey Keahna, and Alyssia Keahna; great-grandson, Giovanni Keahna; three sisters, Lorraine Keahna, Karen (David) OldBear, and Martha Freeman all of Tama; adopted brother, Ernie Running of Minneapolis, MN; and adopted sister, Lois W. Davenport of Tama.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Charlotte Tsethlikai and Ruby Funmaker; and a brother, Dennis Keahna Sr.
