Bernadette A. Hlas, 85, of Tama, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020 at her daughter's home in Davenport. A Private Family Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 24, 2020 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Dennis Conway, Father Andy Upah and Deacon Stan Upah officiating. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. The funeral mass will be live-streamed on the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home and Cremation Services Facebook page at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 24.
Bernadette was born on April 8, 1935, in rural Chelsea, Iowa, the daughter of John and Hattie (Husak) Cibula.
She graduated from Toledo High School.
On December 27, 1956, she was united in marriage to Philip J. Hlas in rural Chelsea, Iowa.
Bernadette was a homemaker and raised her children from 1956-1988. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a legal clerk for John Hyland, Attorney. After moving to Tama in 1988, she worked at the Tama County Courthouse. Bernadette was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, where she served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and family time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include eight children, John (Sue) Hlas of Cedar Falls, James (Susan) Hlas of Toledo, Rita (Thomas) Rushing of Steelville, IL, Anne (Martin) McDermott of Delmar, Joseph (Julie) Hlas of Lawton, Jerry (Christina) Hlas of Adel, Teresa (Jon) Goodney of Davenport, and Maria (Kirk) Hillard of Davenport; seventeen grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Upah of Tama, and Kathleen (John) Runyan of Urbandale; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Philip; and brother-in-law, Donald Upah.
Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama.
