TAMA-Billy Charles Mathes, 74, of Tama, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Carrington Place of Toledo. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with Pastor Greg Davidson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 4-7 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama.
Billy was born on February 8, 1937, in Rural Putnam County, MO, the son of Herbert and Levina (Collins) Mathes.
He graduated from Tama High School.
On June 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marlene Mae Timm at St. John's Lutheran Church in Victor. He retired from the Tama Paperboard after forty-three years of service. Billy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama where he was formerly on the church council and was a Sunday school music leader. He was a former member of the Tama Fire Department and also was an EMT-A with the ambulance for many years. Billy enjoyed bowling in his earlier years and was a member of many local bands. He also liked to do woodworking projects. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marlene on December 27, 2009; two brothers, Herbert Jr. and Karlen Mathes; and three nephews.
Survivors include three sons, Brian (Cherie) Mathes of Toledo, Scott (Julee) Mathes of Tama and Tom (Jody) Mathes of Tama; his grandchildren, Ryan (Lesley) and Drew (Natasha), Levi and Abby, Logan and Landon; two great-grandchildren, Brendon and Nevaeh; two sisters, Barb (Denny) Sheehan of Unionville, MO and JoAnn Ferguson of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
