Bruce Carroll Hanna, 87, of Tama and Toledo, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 1-3 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. A Memorial Service will follow Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Kerry Carson officiating. A Private Family Interment will be held Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.
Bruce Carroll Hanna, born November 10, 1934. Bruce graduated Lisbon HS Lisbon, ND in 1952, then graduated from Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND in 1957. On June 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Boom in Edgeley, ND. He began his teaching and coaching career in Alexandria, ND the following year. In 1964, he moved the family to Toledo, Iowa. Bruce loved the rolling hills of Tama County. He was a chemistry teacher for the South Tama County School district, as well as a basketball, boys & girls golf, and cross-country coach.
After retiring early from South Tama County School District, Bruce purchased Dick's Restaurant and Granada Lounge, which he operated for approximately 12 years. After selling Dick's, he returned to South Tama County Schools as an 8 th grade math teacher. Bruce led the 1998 Girls Golf team to the 1 st ever team state championship for the school district. The following year he was named the WAMAC Conference "Coach of the Year". Bruce was also the voice of Trojan Football as the press box play-by-play announcer for home Trojan football games.
He was a member of the Toledo Presbyterian Church since arriving in Toledo. Bruce loved the game of golf and was a proud member of the Tama-Toledo Country Club for 57 years. He carded more than 10 holes in one. An avid Hawkeye fan, he held football season tickets for nearly 50 years. Bruce was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for several decades.
After retiring for good, he and Marylin spent their winters in McAllen, Texas until traveling became too difficult. He and Marilyn have become one of the first couples to live in the new Birkwood senior community.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Marilyn of Toledo; three children, Jill Hanna (Bill Harrison) of Des Moines, Brian (Virginia) Hanna of Marion and Keith Hanna of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Laird, Ben and Erik Hanna; one brother, Fred Hanna of Omaha, NE; one sister, Kathleen Fode of Lawrence, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Ted Hanna; and one sister, Joan Montgomery.
A memorial fund will be established.
