TOLEDO-C. Hazel Walton passed away peacefully Thursday, October 30,2008 at the age of 100 years
at the Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama surrounded by her family and friends. Funeral services will be
held on Monday, November 3,2008 at 11 :00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with Pastor Ron
Arends officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 2 from 5 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips
Funeral Home in Tama. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Hazel was born and raised in Columbia Township south of Tama, Iowa. She was born on February 7,
1908 to Charles L. and Fernanda (Bruhn) Meves. She received her education from attending schools in
Columbia Township. On March 16, 1927, she married Manning E. Hayward. They had one son,
Roderick D. Hayward. Manning died November 18, 1935. She was united in marriage on June 30,
1937 to Harold Walton. He passed away January 12, 1988. Hazel farmed most of her life in Columbia
Township. Later, when many would start thinking about retiring, she opened a fabric store in Tama
called Hazel's Fashion Fabrics. She and Harold retired in 1976 and traveled every year to Canada for
fishing along with trips to Florida or Texas. She was a member of the Tama Federated Club, and
Miriam Circle of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Hazel lived a full and active life until her death with her
passions and interests being her family, friends, fishing, traveling, gardening, playing cards, sewing,
reading, and her church. She also loved politics and kept up every day with the news; she even voted
recently for the 2008 election. Her influence, love, support, and friendship will be remembered and
missed by her many fnends and family members.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Laurel G. Meves; and her husbands, Manning
Hayward and Harold Walton.
She is survived by her son, Roderick D. (Coreen) Hayward of Toledo; grandchildren, Joan (F. Peter Jr.)
Helm of Toledo, Michael D. Hayward (Theresa) of Tarna, and Chris (Rod) Drummer of Tama. She is
also survived by six great-grandchildren, Courtney Hayward of Omaha, NE, James Hayward of Ankeny,
Jessica Drummer of Marshalltown, Benjamin, Nathaniel, and Jackson Drummer all of Tama; and a
niece, Lee Meves of Cedar Rapids.
