Carolyn "Byetena" Mitchell-Hoag, 68, of Tama, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. A Traditional Wake will be held Tuesday evening, February 7, 2017 at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Larry Lasley Sr. as speaker.
Carolyn was born on January 14, 1949, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Margaret Mitchell and Frank Youngbear.
Carolyn graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa and then went to school to receive her CNA. Carolyn enjoyed being surrounded by loved ones, especially being with her grandchildren. She liked the outdoors, gardening, caring for her lawn, yard sales, sewing, cooking, and listening to her favorite country singers, George Strait and Alan Jackson. She enjoyed keeping up with her son's experiences on the pow-wow trail. Carolyn was beloved by many, and will never be forgotten in the hearts of those lives she touched.
Survivors include three sons, Lonny J. Street of Hollister, NC, Richard Street of North Dakota, and Steve Street Sr. of Washington; two daughters, Kristina Hoag, and Michelle Hoag both of Tama; nineteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Davenport of Wright City, MO, and June Bear of Tama; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson.
