Obituary

Charles William Herink, 88, of Elk Run Heights, passed away, Sunday, September 30, 2012 at home under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 3, 2012 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Charles was born on May 26, 1924, west of Clutier on the family farm, the son of Ed and Emma (Waterbeck) Herink.
Charles served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On November 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to DeLilah Kathleen Bland in Kirksville, MO. Charles retired from John Deere in Waterloo after twenty-five years of service. He also had his own landscaping business and worked at Waterloo Valve Spring prior to going to Deere's. Charles enjoyed flying his own airplane. He also liked hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. Charles built several steam engines.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Edward Joe and Donald Herink; five sisters, Marie Benda, Violet Dungy, Dorothy Colvert, Betty Viers, and Darlene Handsaker; and one sibling in infancy; and a great-grandson.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, DeLilah Kathleen of Elk Run Heights; two children, Kathie (Al) Johnson of Waterloo, and David (Kim) Herink of Waterloo; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson; two sisters, Margaret (Merlin) Handsaker of Colo, and Mary Lou Prusha of Toledo; and many nieces and nephews.
