David Lindsay Brown, 62, of Tama, passed away, Saturday, December 30, 2023 at his home under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Traditional Wake will be held Saturday evening, December 30, 2023 at the family home, 249 Meskwaki Road, on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. A Traditional Graveside Service will be held Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery in rural Tama with Wayne Pushetonequa as speaker.
David was born on September 9, 1961, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Wilson and Patricia (Papakee) Brown.
David attended the Sac and Fox Day school, and South Tama School System. After graduation, he attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and also furthered his love for cooking by attending classes at DMACC. He worked various jobs with the Sac and Fox Tribe such as the Meskwaki Settlement School, Meskwaki Bingo and Casino, JBS and Meskwaki Senior Services. His favorite job was working at the Meskwaki Senior Services where he was able to engage and communicate with elders and cook them delicious meals. He loved making his fry bread for the seniors in attendance.
Survivors include his siblings, Vanessa Brown, Harlan (Henrietta) Whitefish, Gia Brown-Bear, Kirby (Andrea) Whitefish, Marissa Brown, Lisa Brown and Patrick (Roberta) Whitefish all of Tama; adopted brother, Russell Youngbear of Tama; adopted mother, Adrienne Mauskemo of Tama; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Wilson and Patricia; brother, Craig Brown; granddaughter, Dana Brown; and nephew, Emerson Brown-Tenorio.
