David Edward Hartsell, 77, of Des Moines, formerly of Tama, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Memorial Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating.
David was born on July 16, 1938, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Paul and Esther (Carl) Hartsell.
David was a retired US Postal Service employee. At one time, he enjoyed operating his HAM radio, playing and, later in life, watching golf. He was also an avid reader of history and enjoyed talking politics. He loved telling jokes and kidding around. Every week he treated himself to a piece of pie. It was a ritual. Pumpkin was his favorite.
Survivors include his sister, Janet Hunnicutt of Normal, IL; maternal aunt, Frances Carl of Montezuma; four nieces, Denise Grupp-Berbon, Emily Grupp, Teresa Williams, and Susan Willison; two nephews, Martin Grupp and Ted Crawford; and a cousin, Lynn Carl.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Paul Hartsell; and two sisters, Judy Dean-Hartsell and Sue Fryslie.
Memorials may be directed to the Lions Club.
