David "Bubba" Vavra, 55, of Toledo passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at his home under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Rev. Dewey Grimes officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
David was born on June 6, 1958 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Louis and Irene (Ferris) Vavra.
He graduated from South Tama High School and received his Associates Degree from Marshalltown Community College and his Bachelors and MBA degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.
On June 29, 1985, he was united in marriage to Jorena Wignall in Tama, Iowa. David was a director of Engineering at Richie's in Conrad, Montezuma Manufacturing and most recently Kinze Manufacturing in Williamsburg. David was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Tama and served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was well known as a longtime musician in the community playing in many bands. He loved to ride motorcycles with his friends, fish, camp, cook and garden, especially tomatoes. David also enjoyed watching cartoons with his daughter and listening to all types and styles of music.
Survivors include his wife Jo Jo Vavra of Toledo; one son, Louis (Katie) Wacha of Waterloo; one daughter, Alison Vavra of Toledo; three grandchildren, Chloe, Wyatt and Memphis; one sister, Virginia "Ginny" (Bart) Halverson of Arkansas; three brothers, Roger Schafer of Maryland, John (Liz) Vavra and Mike Vavra of Arkansas; his best friend, Jim Kriegel of Montour; his mothers-in-law, Nellie Morehead of Toledo and Caroline Wignall of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother in infancy; and his fathers-in-law, William Morehead and Harlan Wignall.
A memorial fund has been established.
