CHELSEA-Dennis N. Murty, 79, of Chelsea, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Friday May 13, 2011 from 4 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Dennis was born on January 5, 1932 in Green Mountain, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Gladys "Peggy" (Burke) Murty.
On April 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Barbara DeFrance in Waterloo, Iowa.
Dennis was a long time Tama County farmer. He was very devoted to his farm. He was later employed at the Meskwaki Bingo & Casino Hotel. Dennis enjoyed going to stock car races and collecting John Deere toy tractors. He was very fond of Thanksgiving dinner, especially the pumpkin pie. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter, Darla Murty; his granddaughter, Shelly Culbertson-Thomazin, one brother, Richard Murty; and two sisters, Barbara Hartsoe and Sharon Sterns.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Barbara of Chelsea; his children, Jerry (Debbi) Murty of Tama, Rene (Chuck) Thompson of Tama, Randy (Stacey) Murty of Malcom, Janet (Alan) Manatt of Tama, Denise (Pat) Garrett of Osborn, MO and Dave (Lisa) Murty of Chelsea; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Lyle (Jean) Murty of Waterloo, Beverly Graff of Tama, Joe (Pat) Murty of Clinton, Lawrence (Pat) Murty of Tama and Shirley Deal of Green Mountain; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Coco.
A memorial fund has been established.
