Obituary

Derold K. Halverson, 78, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at his home in Tama surrounded by his beloved family and friends after a short fight against cancer. He was under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with Pastor Thomas Dowling officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Friday, November 16, 2012 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Derold was born on April 12, 1934, in West Union, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Evelyn (Kaster) Halverson.
He graduated from West Union High School and went on to marry the love of his life, Shirley Ann Sutter of Elgin, Iowa. They were married on March 23, 1952. In his early years, Derold farmed with his father and then went on to work at Darling Inc. in Alpha, IA, where he was employed for sixteen years. In 1972, Derold and Shirley moved to Tama, where he began working at the Tama Pack. He worked there for twenty-six years, retiring in 1998. Derold had a passion for fishing. He enjoyed bow hunting, coon hunting, boating, and spending time with his family. He also liked listening to good ole' country music, especially Hank Williams.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and a granddaughter, Anna Jo Halverson.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Shirley of Tama; two sons, Steven (Annie) Halverson of Marshalltown, and Brian (Deb) Halverson of Toledo; seven daughters, Karen (Craig) Mann of Toledo, Connie Welsh (Jeff Schultz) of Tama, Robin (James) Buckley of Tama, Brenda (Tom) Anderson of Montour, Candee (Chon) Garcia of Brush, CO, Raylene (Joel) Jimenez of Garwin, and Monica Halverson of Tama; twenty-seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two brothers, Wayne (Donna) Halverson of West Union, and Dennis (Betty) Halverson of Eldorado.
