GRINNELL-Donald Dean Schrack Sr., age 92, of Grinnell and formerly of Tama, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor John Epperson and Don Schrack Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. A Memorial Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009 from 5-8 PM at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama
Donald was born on May 4, 1917, in Lexington, NE, the son of Roy and Frances (Lucas) Schrack.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was fortunate enough to survive the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1952, he graduated from Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney, NE.
On August 14, 1953, he was united in marriage to Rosemary "Rosie" Wilson in Des Moines, Iowa.
Donald was a former shop teacher and Junior High basketball and football coach in the Tama School system. He was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles, VFW, Iowa State University Victory Club, and the Elks. Donald was an avid Nebraska football and Iowa State sports fan.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister; and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary of Grinnell; his children, Donald (Kristy) Schrack of Grinnell, Dianna (Pat) Hoye of Ankeny, Dana (Kathy) Schrack of Dubuque, and Dion (Shelley) Schrack of Grinnell; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
