Obituary

TAMA- Doris J. Polka, age 79, of Tama, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at her home under the care of Grinnell Regional Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 19, 2009 from 4-7 PM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with a Vigil Service at 7 PM.
Doris was born on October 18, 1929, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse Milton and Mabel Irene (Wilcox) Brown.
She graduated from Tama High School.
On May 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Paul Polka at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. Doris was a former waitress and manager of Double D Supper Club. She retired from South Tama School District, where she worked as a press operator in the media department. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary's. Doris enjoyed golfing, fishing, bridge and any kind of cards. She was an avid Hawkeye fan, especially football.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters, Norma Werner and Dorothy Brown; and one grandson, Larry Hamor Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Paul of Tama; six children, Patricia (Bob) Youngman of Tama, Mike (Lena) Polka of New London, Dan (Teri) Polka of Tama, Bill (Brendie) Polka of Des Moines, Angie Van Nevel (Dolan) of Loveland, CO, and Marty (Lori) Polka of Norwalk; twenty-eight grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; one brother, Jesse (Jean) Brown Jr. of Tama; and several nieces and nephews.
