TOLEDO- Dorothy I. Maplethorpe, age 87, of Toledo, died Friday, January 5, 2007 at Grandview Acres in Toledo following a lengthy illness. Memorial Services and Interment will be held at a future date.
Dorothy I. Maplethorpe was born on February 3, 1919, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Leonard and Prudence (Goodie) Bowen.
While Dorothy was a nurse in Iowa City, she met her future husband, Charles W. Maplethorpe Jr. as he was finishing his residency. They were married on July 25, 1948, in Iowa City. After raising her children, Dorothy helped with her husband's medical practice in Toledo.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Iowa Nurses Association, and a founding member of the Wieting Theatre Guild. Her other activities included a being a Den Mother for Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls and serving on the board in 1959 to get the swimming pool built.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dr. Charles W. Maplethorpe Jr. on August 12, 2000; and two brothers, Babe and Sidney Bowen.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl (Phil Dean) Maplethorpe of River Falls, WI; three sons, Charles W. Maplethorpe III of Washington, D.C., John Maplethorpe of Toledo, and Jim Maplethorpe of Toledo; five grandchildren, Andrew and Conrad Dean, Matthew, Jerad and Brianna Maplethorpe.
