Obituary

Ernestine "Da bo we" Keahna, 82, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020 after a lengthy illness at her home on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. She was under the care of Hospice Campassus.  A Traditional Graveside Service will be held Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 2:00 PM at the Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement with Luke Kapayou as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Wednesday evening, February 19, 2020 at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement.

Ernestine was born on August 20, 1937, in Toledo, Iowa. Her parents were Elizabeth F. Roberts and Conklin Morgan.

Ernestine spent her childhood on the Meskwaki Settlement until she moved to Denver, Colorado in the 1950's, where she started her family. Ernestine returned to the Meskwaki Settlement in the mid-1970's and worked a series of jobs that included a CNA at Sunny Hill and Housekeeping Supervisor at MBCH. After retirement, she enjoyed doing the things she loved which included creating traditional ribbon appliqué, working outdoors, spending time with family and playing at the casino. One of the most important aspects of her life was helping others in time of need. Ernestine was an excellent cook and used her skills to aid numerous families during their mourning period.

Survivors include six children, Craig (Mai) Young Bear, Mary Young Bear, Nina Young Bear, Kristina (Tom) Young Bear, Chad Keahna, and Douglas Cadotte; one brother, Leighton Roberts Sr.; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Luther Roberts, Norwood Roberts Sr., and Leo Morgan; sister, Darlene Roberts; son, George Young Bear III; and daughter, Marie Keahna.
