Obituary

TAMA-Everett Kapayou, age 73, of the Meskwaki Settlement, died on Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames due to a short illness. Traditional Graveside Services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2006, at 2:00 PM at the Morgan Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement. A wake was held Thursday evening at the Fox Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement, rural Tama.
Everett Kapayou was born May 13, 1933, in Tama, the son of Loman and Lucille (Oldbear) Kapayou.
He graduated from Tama High School.
He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
He was united in marriage to Vivian Keahna. He worked as a bricklayer and in construction. He was also an artist, known for his traditional Meskwaki songs. Everett was presented an award from the National Heritage Fellowship in 1993 to honor his knowledge of traditional Meskwaki love songs.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Eugene Kapayou and Eddie Kapayou.
Survivors include his wife Vivian Kapayou of Tama; step-son Mike Keahna of Tama; sisters Agnes Kapayou of Tama and Gladys Goose of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
