Obituary

Frank Edward Pushetonequa Jr., 95, of Tama passed away Friday, November 7, 2014 at Premier Estates of Toledo. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Saturday evening, November 8, 2014 at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement.

Frank was born on August 25, 1919, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Frank Edward Sr. and Martha (Wanatee) Pushetonequa. He attended Pipestone Boarding School in Minnesota and graduated from Haskell High School in Lawrence Kansas. At different points in his educational career he also attended Coe college, University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University and Louisiana State University. Frank served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army Calvary and then in the Army Air Corps. He married Georgia Ann Wulf on January 10, 1966 in Peoria, IL.
Frank was an artist and also painted houses. He was also a Tribal Planner, Alcohol Counselor, and had formerly served as a Tribal Council member. As a Planner, he was instrumental in getting the Tribal Center and gym, Senior Center apartments and the Casino established. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, bird watching, reading, singing and dancing at powwows. Frank enjoyed teaching others about the Meskwaki Traditions. In his younger years he was a boxer and played football.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Georgia in 2011; a son Frank; his siblings James Pushetonequa, Virginia Potts, Charles Pushetonequa and Cornelia Pushetonequa; a stepdaughter Kara Hall; and a niece Carol Keahna.
Survivors include his children, Mary Pushetonequa and Ruth Pushetonequa both of Tama, James Pushetonequa of Lawrence, KS, and Janan (Kurt) Mohler of Divernon, IL; eleven grandchildren; thirty seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; his stepdaughter, Jane DeVault of California; his nephews Charles, Adrian, Wayne and Del Ray Pushetonequa and Eldon Joy; and nieces Beverly Roberts, Sharon Mervin and Cheryl Wright.
