TOLEDO-Howard Albert Nitz, age 87, of Toledo and formerly of Estherville, died Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama with Pastor Phil Borleske officiating and A Memorial Service and Interment will take place in Estherville, Iowa at a later date.
Howard was born on September 8, 1921, in Ledyard, IA, the son of Max and Elsie (Lange) Nitz.
He was educated in the Ledyard Public School.
Howard worked in a clothing store in Elmore, MN until he entered the U.S. Army on January 4, 1943. After nine months at Ft. Ord, CA, he was sent to the Pacific Theater of War with the 6th Division. He served there for three years, arriving home in December of 1945.
On January 1, 1947, he married Betty De Haan of Orange City, IA in Blue Earth, MN. There were four children born to them. Howard worked for ten years as a floral designer in Estherville and then joined the Postal Service and worked there until he retired in 1983.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and infant daughter, DeAnne; one sister, Maxine Frandle; and one nephew, Roger Frandle.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Toledo; two sons, Dave (Diane) Nitz of Tama and Craig Nitz of Long Beach, CA; one daughter, Marsha Cossey of Conroe, TX; six grandchildren, Sarah (Adam) Hyatt of Marion, Heather and Taylor Nitz of Tama, and Nicole, Rebecca, and Jessica de Rimanoczy of The Woodlands, TX; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Albert (Jennie) De Haan and Stanley (Phyllis) De Haan both of Orange City, IA and Orville Frandle of Blue Earth, MN; a sister-in-law, Carolyn De Haan of Orange City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
