Obituary

James Pat McCarroll, 83, of Toledo, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021, under the care of Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael McAndrew as celebrant. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, with military rites, in Toledo. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2021, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM prior to Mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Pat was born on September 29, 1938, in Waterloo to Austen and Audrey (Gray) McCarroll.

The family lived Traer. James graduated from Traer High School in 1956.

He worked at John Deere intermittently, while working his way through Iowa State Teacher's College (now UNI). He graduated with a degree in science with an emphasis in biology. After college he worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing until he was drafted by the Army. In the Army, Pat served in the Chemical Corps School in the Security Department. After his honorable discharge, he went to work at John Deere for 29 ½ years. Pat retired in 1995.

Pat loved football, especially Notre Dame football. He also enjoyed dogs, German Shepherds mostly. Pat enjoyed fishing when he was able to get out. He loved music, whether it was singing or listening to it. In the past, he sang in St. Patrick's choir, with his beautiful deep voice. There was always a CD or two in the car to sing along with.

He was married to Ila Ransom, they had a daughter, Tamara (Chris) Garrido and a stillborn son, Quinn. The couple divorced in 1979.

Pat married Barbara Franklin and the had a son, Jason McCarroll. They divorced in 1985.

He later married Deanna (Ross) Dickens in 2007.

Pat is survived by grandchildren, Rashon Burrell, Tiffany Archer, MaKayla Garrido, and Makenzie McCarroll; one step-daughter, Lisa (Daryl) Petersen; and many step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and son Quinn.
