Jean M. Hinegardner, 101, of Montour, passed away Friday, February 6, 2026 at her home under the loving care of Iowa River Hospice following a brief illness. It was Jean's wish to make an anatomical gift to the University of Iowa Hospital through their deeded body program. A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 1-3 PM at the Montour Community Building.
Jean was born in Montour, Iowa on April 8, 1924, the daughter of Russell and Grace (Wade) Holmes. The oldest of six children, Jean attended school in Toledo, Iowa. After high school graduation, she became a country schoolteacher in rural Montour. She married Oris W. Hinegardner on August 23, 1945 while he was enlisted in the U.S. Army. She traveled with him until his enlistment was complete.
They returned to farming in Montour. Her son David, was born in 1947. A daughter, Betty, joined the family in 1954.
Jean and Oris were successful livestock and grain farmers and supplemented their income with various endeavors including apple orchard, strawberry fields and other produce items. David is currently continuing the family business.
Jean was devoted to her family and friends. She spent her life supporting and nurturing them.
Survivors include her son, David (Julie) Hinegardner; daughter, Betty Santema; three grandchildren, Nova (Jerry) Ebersole, Jennifer (Dennis) Allen, and Jesse (Dawn) Hinegardner; great grandchildren, Justin (Shannon LeFevour) Ebersole, James (Brittany Foos) Ebersole, Kennedy Boliver, Finley Allen, Emery Allen, Wyatt Wacha, Memphis Wacha; and great-great grandchildren, Vaeda Bryan, Jake Ebersole, Jed Ebersole, Elsie Ebersole, and Walker Ebersole. Also mourning her loss is chosen family member, Humberto Meza; sister, Ardis Babcock; brother John (Margie) Holmes; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Grace Holmes; her husband, Oris in 2010; sisters Clarice (Dean) Umdenstock, and Margaret (Howard) Lyon; brother Bill (Carol Ann) Holmes; and brother-in-law, Jack Babcock.
Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice and Living Faith United Methodist Church.
