Jeffery “Jeff” Lee Banes, 66, of Ankeny and formerly of Tama, passed away Monday, September 14, 2026 with his family by his side at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama. Interment will follow at National Cemetery in rural Vining. Visitation will be Friday, September 18, 2026 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Jeffery was born on January 30, 1960, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Gene and Donna (Suchy) Banes.
He graduated from South Tama High School in 1978. In high school, Jeff was an accomplished wrestler, making it to state.
Jeffery served his country in the U.S. Army.
Jeff worked for the Tama County Engineer’s Office as a Surveyor, and then Manatt’s, Jasper County, and CTI as a Road Projects Manager. He was a member of CSA. Jeff’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, and going to the races at the Iowa Speedway. He was a Vikings football fan, and loved Iowa State basketball.
Survivors include his children, Jared (Shevaun) Banes of Marshalltown, and Halie (Marc) Dellamuth of Newton; his grandchildren, Ollie Banes, Cora, Maelyn, and Broden Dellamuth; mother, Donna Banes of Toledo; his siblings, Todd (Kim) Banes of Elberon, Annette (Don) Lacina of Tama, and Pam (Jim) Hala of Toledo; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gene; and cousin, Tom Sankot.
A memorial fund will be established.
