Joan Mary Shaw, 79, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the Mayflower Health Center in Grinnell. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Living Faith United Methodist Church with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Friday, March 17, 2017 from 4-8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Joan was born on December 20, 1937 in rural Tama County, Iowa, the daughter of Estel "Bill" and Mary (Smith) Badger.
She was raised and attended schools in Grinnell, Deep River, Montezuma, and Ankeny. Joan graduated in 1956 from Ankeny High School.
On October 12, 1956, she was united in marriage to Bernard R. Shaw at the Tama Methodist Church. They lived in Tama and moved to the family farm in 1964. Joan was a homemaker. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, flower gardening, playing cards, and bird watching. Joan was a member of the Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama, where she was active in United Methodist Women and church committees. She was also on the Oak Hill Cemetery committee.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl (Steve) Hedum of Tama, and Rhonda Shaw of Tama; her siblings, Ruth Ellen See of Waterloo, Carolyn Dayton of Grinnell, Pauline (Robert) Alexander of Tama, and Harold (JoAnn) Badger of Grinnell; her sister-in-law, Mary Hinkle of Tama; nieces, nephews, cousins, special cousins, Bud and Delores Shaw, and Richard Shaw; and her special kids, Danny (Teresa) Vodochodsky and family.
Preceding her in death were her mother on July 7, 1954, her father on December 12, 1984; her husband Bernard November 4, 2005; a daughter Valerie on November 17, 1958; and a son Roderick on June 4, 1982.
A memorial fund has been established.
