Obituary

Joann Mae Parks McBride, 88, of Tama, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024 due to complications of Alzheimer's at Bickford Cottage of Marshalltown under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Monday, May 20, 2024 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Joann was born on May 20, 1935, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Oran and Mabel (Schaffer) Parks.

Joann attended country school in Columbia Township and graduated from Tama High School. She was employed at the Tama County Sheriff's Office where she met and later married Kenneth "Joe" McBride. In 1956, they moved to Algona, Iowa where they both were employed at the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office, until her daughter, Vicki Jo was born. A year later, Joan Kathy became a member of their family. They then returned to Tama County. Joann held a variety of jobs, including part time work at the Sheriff's Office, serving as a matron when females were transported, and cooking for the prisoners. She also worked as a Vet Technician for Dr. DD Davis; and in the Tama County Auditor's office. She was able to work her way up the ladder to become a full-fledged Deputy Sheriff after attending the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. She was active with the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association; and served as the President of the ISSDA in 1993. She retired from the Sheriff's Office in 1997. Joann served on the Tama Ambulance crew from the late 1980's to mid-1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Kathy (Mike) Stok of Harpers Ferry, Iowa and Vicki Jo (Tom) Adams of Toledo; grandchildren, James Michael (Laura) Stok of Richfield, Minnesota, Matt (Beth) Stok of Eagan, Minnesota, Marc (Kerry) Stok of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Missy Stok (Scott) of Marion, Sam (Jenny) Ferriss of Toledo; eight great grandchildren, Ellie, Abby, Roman, Maddie, Emma and Ian Stok, and McKade and McKenna Ferriss; one great-great granddaughter, Wrenley James Petersohn; and her special friend, Mike Richardson of Tama;

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joe McBride in 1992; her brother, Oran Junior Parks; and her son-in-law, Roger Ferriss.
