Obituary

GILMAN- Joel C. Potter, age 42, of Gilman died Friday, August 20, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Kalen Barkholtz officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 24 from 5 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Joel was born on December 10, 1967, in Marshalltown, Iowa the son of Bruce and Dixie (Ewing) Potter. He attended South Tama schools. Joel served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage to Chura Winter on January 14, 2008 in Marshalltown. When he was in school, Joel played in the band. He enjoyed fishing and volunteering his time in the area. Joel especially loved spending time with his kids and helping his brother Dane on the farm. He was a lover of rock music. Joel was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in rural Tama. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce C. Potter; two sisters Kimberly Potter and Kelli Potter; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Survivors include his wife Chura Potter of Tama; daughter, Madeline Potter at home; step son, Braydan Winter at home; his mother Dixie (Ron) Nyheim of Marshalltown; brother, Dane (Mikki) Potter of Toledo; two step brothers, Chris and Nick Nyheim both of Marshalltown; step sister, Rebecca Nyheim of Dubuque; and his aunts, uncles, and cousins.
