TOLEDO-John "Jack" Vest, age 74, of Toledo, died Friday, July 6, 2007 at home under the care of Iowa River Hospice due to a short illness. A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be Sunday, July 8 from 6-8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
John Patrick Vest was born on December 3, 1932, in Valley Junction, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Byrne) Vest.
Jack served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
On June 4, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Whalin in Boone, Iowa. Jack retired from the Des Moines Register after 32 years. After retirement, he served as secretary for ten years for the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Tama.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one daughter, Kathleen; and two brothers, Robert and Aaron Vest.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy of Toledo; sons, John (Lisa) Vest of Frisco, TX, Kelly (Jayne) Vest of Newton, Jeffrey (Rachel) Vest of Colorado Springs, CO, and Tony (Patricia) Vest of Corinth, TX; and a daughter Angela Vest and friend Kip of Marshalltown; ten grandchildren; one brother Don (Colleen) Vest of Independence, MO; one sister, Ethel (Jim) Morgan of Boone; and many nieces and nephews.
