Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Leon Murty, 82, of Clinton, Iowa, formerly of Tama, passed away Friday, March 12, 2021 in DeWitt, Iowa. A Memorial Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Maple Hill Cemetery in Montour, with Military Honors.  Please feel free to leave condolences to the family at www.kruse-phillips.com.

Joe was born to Joe and Peggy Murty in rural Montour, Iowa, and grew up in the Tama area. He went on to graduate from Tama High School and entered the Air Force where he served for four years. Joe met and married his beautiful wife, Inez Mae Cochran on June 10, 1960. They had four boys before Inez sadly passed away in 1990. Joe worked and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after thirty-one years. He also at one point worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter. Joe enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and watching the Green Bay Packers play. He was a long-time member of the F.O.E. (Fraternal Order of Eagles) and The American Legion. Later in life, Joe married his current wife, Patricia Matheson on June 28, 2001.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Peggy; his first wife, Inez; his son, Joe Neal Murty; his siblings, Lyle, Bev Graff, Dennis, Dick, Barbara Hartsoe, and Sharon Sterns; and Patricia's son, John R. Roth.

Joe is survived by his siblings, Lawrence of Tama and Shirley Deal of Green Mountain; his wife, Patricia of Clinton; his sons, Randy Murty of Kansas City, Kansas, Don Murty of Tama (who passed away on April 13, 2021), Larry (Jennifer) Murty of Marshalltown, Frank LaShelle, James (Jean) LaShelle, and Larry (Debi) Thein; and his four daughters, LeAnn (Leroy) Young, Christine (Keith) Lyman, Lorna (Elmer) Pothof, and Kymber of Clinton; his grandchildren, Abligail Murty of Marshalltown, Marnie, Kimberly, Ernest, and Zachary Hennings; and his special pal and grandson, Joey Bevans of Clinton.
