CLUTIER-Joseph C. Svoboda, age 75, of Clutier died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a sudden illness. A funeral liturgy will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27 from 4 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM and a vigil service will be held at 7 PM.
Joe was born on January 6, 1933 near Clutier the oldest son of Charles and Mildred (Podhajsky) Svoboda. He attended rural schools and graduated from Toledo High School in 1951. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Carole Martin on June 8, 1957. Joe was a lifelong farmer in the Clutier area. In his free time he was a member of a dance band playing double bass. Joe was active in KD Lodge, American Legion, ASCS, and various farm organizations. He was also a 4-H leader for many years. Joe especially enjoyed his grandchildren and listening to polka music.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Carole of Clutier; five children, Anne (Steve) Ausdemore of Wisner, NE, Connie (James Tielebein) Svoboda of Independence, Timothy (Cheryl) Svoboda of Kansas City, MO, Debra (Keith) Epp of West Des Moines, and Randall (Liz Belgarde) Svoboda of Shueyville; six grandchildren, Samuel and Alexander Ausdemore, Gabriella Ruggiero, Madeline and Joshua Svoboda, and Grace Epp; three brothers, Bernard (Mary) Svoboda, Laurence (Marlus) Svoboda, and John (Marilyn) Svoboda all of Clutier; and three sisters, Martha (Charles) Dolezal of Toledo, Dorothy (Lawrence) Hagerty of Tama, and Ludmilla (John) Perkins of Cresco.
