TOLEDO – Kenny E. "Red" Smith, age 63, of Toledo died Monday morning, October 2, 2006 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 10:30 AM at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Kenny was born on September 25, 1943 in Grinnell, the son of Thomas and Dorothy (Jochims) Smith. He graduated from Tama High School in 1962. Kenny married Karen Sells on August 25, 1963 at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in rural Toledo. He was retired from Fisher Controls in Marshalltown. Kenny was a member of the Tama-Toledo Country Club and UAW #863. He was a master gardener and helped with the gardens at the Iowa Juvenile Home in Toledo. Kenny enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. Kenny was also an avid Hawkeye football and wrestling fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece Keely Lacina.
Survivors include his wife Karen of Toledo; children, Kenne (Mark) Hoskey of Chelsea, Kelly (Tricia) Smith of Toledo, and Kandi (Tim) Hendricks of Gladbrook; seven grandchildren Kourtne, Kolton, Kainen, Kaleb, Keaten, Kamryn, and Kloie; two sisters Rosemary (Jim) Lacina of Tama and Mary (Ron) Timm of Toledo; a brother Mike (Donna) Smith of Altus Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
