Kevin was born on November 19, 1961, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Ferneau) Herink.

Kevin graduated from North Tama High School in 1980. In 1984, he received his BS in Animal Science from Iowa State University, and was in the AGR Fraternity and a member of the Livestock Judging team.

On August 10, 1984, he was united in marriage to Tammy Lyons at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Clutier. Kevin was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer, where he was on the Parish Council. He was also a member of Farm Bureau board, where he was a President, Vice President, and voting member. Kevin was a past President on New Century FS and was on the Growmark Board. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to Iowa State Football games, NY Times crossword, snow skiing, and family camping trips.
