TOLEDO-Larry "Monk" Shefchik, 84, of Toledo, passed away Friday, October 20, 2023 at his step-daughter's home in Toledo under the care of UnityPoint Hospice. A family burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama, at a later date.

Larry was born on May 12, 1939, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Harold and Edith Mae (Hamiel) Shefchik. He graduated from South Tama County High School in 1957. Larry went into the Army during the Vietnam War. He then started as a clerk for the post office in 1967, working his way up to being a mail carrier and retired after 31 years.

He had a dry sense of humor. Larry always said, "don't bip a bop, until you hear from pop and pop ain't talking". He could build anything, even his own home! He enjoyed golf, jogging, softball and playing video poker at the casino. Larry knew the value of a dollar and always worked hard for it.

Survivors include his son, James Dean Shefchik; step-daughters, Delrae Hennessy, Tina Durnin and Adonica Hennessy, all of Toledo; granddaughters, Isabella Kelsie Shefchik of Waterloo and Elizabeth GracieMae Shefchik of Toledo; and his beloved dog, Goldie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and step-daughter, Lasiene Hennessy.

Memorials may be directed to Toledo Fire and EMS or to Tama County Humane Society.
