TAMA-Laverne Sears Thompson, 91, of Tama, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Haven Cemetery in rural Tama. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Laverne was born on November 12, 1919, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Maurice B. and Lois (Sears) Thompson. Laverne farmed his entire life in the Haven area. He also served his country in the US Army during World War II. Laverne was united in marriage to Alice Osborn Wiese on June 25, 1984 in Memphis, MO. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Laverne enjoyed fishing, gardening, and fried chicken. He bowled in his earlier years and also liked to play cards.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Alice in 2000; and a grandson, Chris Wiese.
Survivors include three sons, Kent (Sue Thomae) Wiese of Chelsea, Dennis (Penny) Wiese of Belle Plaine, and Craig (Chris) Wiese of Conrad; two daughters, Sara (Ron) Feisel of Tama and Carol Garcia of Greeley, CO; three sisters, Helen Stephens of Toledo, Doris (Owen) Flanagan of Ames, and Mary Lee McCurry of Grinnell; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; a nephew, Ken McCurry; three nieces, Cindy Rose, Janice Coble, and Jody Pietz; three great nieces; and a great nephew.
A memorial fund has been established.
