Obituary

BROOKLYN- Leonard Vernon Zigler, 87, of Brooklyn and formerly of Tama died Friday, October 29, 2010, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A Funeral Service will be held Monday, November 1, 2010 at 10:30 AM, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Koszta Cemetery in rural Marengo. Visitation will be held Monday, November 1, 2010 from 9:30-10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Leonard was born on June 12, 1923, in rural Tama County, the son of Alva and Lela (Fowler) Zigler.
He graduated from Redding High School in 1942.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from January 10, 1944 until his discharge in 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Battle Star and recommended for a Silver Star for action in combat in Italy. He attended college in Iowa City after his discharge from the Army.
On August 24, 1946, he married Betty L. Brott in Troy, Kansas. He was a crane operator for the Tie Plant in Tama until its closure. He was an owner/operator of Zigler's Nursing Home in Tama and also worked for Gethman Construction where he did cement work. He later worked as a mechanic for the Ford garage in Toledo. Leonard enjoyed genealogy, antiques, and liked to collect old violins and cars and also restored them. He liked to listen to Blue Grass Music and attend concerts. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Betty on August 26, 2006; a grandson, Shawn Zigler; one sister, Donna Gitautis; and a son-in-law, Laverne Arp.
Survivors include his children, Coleen (Ron) Nekola of Jesup, Vernon (Diane) Zigler of Marshalltown, David (Gail) Zigler of Horseshoe Bend, AR and Gary (Patricia) Zigler of Tama; his grandchildren, Kim (Todd) Banes, Kris Arp, Kendall (Sheryl) Arp, Andrea (Jeff) Coen, Angel Blackburn, Kelli (Jay) Swick, Levi (Laura) Zigler, Kami (Jeremy) Anderson, Shannon Dobbs, Shain Zigler, Sharissa Zigler and Shace Zigler; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Jean Kriegel of Tama.
