TOLEDO-Linda Elizabeth Purvis, age 60, of Toledo, died on Monday, October 8, 2007 at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 12, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo with Pastor J.D. Boatman officiating. Interment will be Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Bible Grove Christian Church Cemetery in rural Memphis, Missouri. Visitation will be Thursday, October 11, 2007 from 3-7 PM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo.
Linda Elizabeth Purvis was born on August 8, 1947, in Kirksville, Missouri, the daughter of Jessie and Ruby (Burrus) Purvis. She was raised in the Bible Grove, Missouri community where she attended grade school. She graduated from High School in Memphis, Missouri and received her Bachelors and Masters Degree from Northeast Missouri State College. Linda was a Physical Education teacher for thirty-six years at South Tama School District and coached girls basketball and track. She was recently honored for her role in starting the Junior High girls track program at South Tama. Linda was currently helping test students at the school and was teaching a class at Buena Vista College at their Marshalltown location.
Linda was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. She faithfully supported all athletic events at South Tama. Her hobbies included traveling, golfing, attending musicals and watching professional sports on TV. She especially enjoyed spending time with her nieces and great nieces and nephew. Linda enjoyed helping people around her and will be greatly missed by her many friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one brother in infancy.
Survivors include one brother, Leonard (Nancy) Purvis of Lenexa, Kansas; one sister, Louise Purvis of Tama; two nieces, Tammy (Joe) Brown of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and Teresa (Jeff) Harrison of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four great nieces and one great-nephew.
A memorial fund will be established for South Tama Athletics or may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
