Louise Youngbear, 81, of Tama, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Friday, January 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Morgan Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker. A Traditional Wake will be held Thursday evening at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.
Louise was born on May 5, 1935, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of William and Alice Poweshiek Sr.
She graduated from Tama High School.
Louise served her country in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
Louise married Kenneth Youngbear Jr. in Tama. She retired from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. Louise served on the Meskwaki Tribal Council as Treasurer. She was a member of the Robert Morgan Post.
Survivors include her children, George (Ruth) Garvin of Black River Falls, WI, Georgette Garvin of Shakopee, MN, Georgianna (Russell) Joey of Toledo, Greg (Sequoia) Garvin of Black River Falls, WI, Ralph (Christine) Yellow Thunder of Osseo, WI, Norman (Cheryl) Seymour of Tama, and Shari (Carl) Anderson of Orem, UT; four sisters, Arlene Keahna of Tama, Marlis Kaniatobe of Alhambra, CA, Doris American Horse of West Covina, CA, and Sylvia Kapayou of Tama; one brother, Ernie (Iris) Roberts of Tama; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Geoffrey Garvin; two brothers, William and Eugene Poweshiek; and four sisters, Frances Blackcloud, Marion Hazel Roberts, Geneva Papakee, and Kathleen Poweshiek.
