TOLEDO-Lucy Jo Curtis, age 99, a resident of Carrington Place, Toledo and formerly of Greene, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at Carrington Place under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. Interment has been rescheduled for Friday, December 11, 2009 at 3 PM at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene, Iowa. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2009 from 5 – 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7 PM.
Lucy was born on June 26, 1910, in Dyersville, Iowa, the daughter of Emmett and Elizabeth (Ostwinkle) McGrane.
She received all of her education in the Catholic Schools at Farley and Elma, Iowa.
On November 18, 1930, she was united in marriage to Dell Curtis in Elma, Iowa. Lucy was a homemaker and also worked with her husband in the Hardware and Grocery Store in Greene. She and Dell were founding members of the Round Grove Golf and Country Club in Greene, where they enjoyed playing golf. Lucy was an enthusiastic trout fisherman. She and Dell enjoyed fishing in Northeast Iowa. In her late 70's, she took up acrylic painting and enjoyed crocheting. She was a gracious hostess and her door was always open to friends and family.
Lucy was an active member at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene for many years. She was a 60+ year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, where she served a term as Grand Regent. She served on Greene's City Planning Board for two years. She was also a 50 year member of the Federated Woman's Club, where she was a past president. Lucy was an avid bridge player, participating in several clubs as well as marathon bridge tournaments in both Greene and Tama-Toledo.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Dell in 2002; one brother, Orville McGrane; two sisters, Lucinda Stratton and Eunice Beckman.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Bill) Moulton of Toledo and Karen (Ben) Wegand of Nixa, MO; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren and one on the way.
A memorial fund has been established.
