Ludwig James Dostal, 94, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Premier Estates of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Friday, October 28, 2016 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service following at 7 PM.
Ludwig was born on September 7, 1922, in Howard Township in Tama County, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Mary (Sotyn) Dostal.
He attended Howard #6 through the 8th grade.
During World War II, he worked at an aircraft factory in California. After moving back to Iowa, he farmed with his father.
On July 18, 1946, he was united in marriage to Reva Caster at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. They farmed for the first thirty years, eight in the Garwin area and the other years in the Toledo area. In 1956, Lud worked nights at Wilson Packing Company in Cedar Rapids, while continuing to farm and milk cows. In 1958, he started a long history with South Tama Community School District Middle School first as a bus driver and later as head custodian. He retired from the school in 1987. During his retirement, he remained active, delivering Meals on Wheels for twenty-five years and providing transportation to senior citizens to hospital appointments in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and other cities. He was also active in Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus, selling Christmas trees and Tootsie Rolls. He enjoyed fishing and traveling and spent a lot of his retirement traveling around the United States, and England, Scotland and Wales. It was also during retirement that he began woodworking. The Nativity Set used by the Toledo Fire Department each year was made by Ludwig. He was very active in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama, both as an usher and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Ludwig and Reva celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on July 18, 2016.
Survivors include his wife, Reva of Toledo; four children, Alan Dostal of Lake Brownwood, TX, Randy Dostal of Toledo, Becky (Bill) Faircloth of Toledo, and Kim (Judy) Dostal of Albion; eleven grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Vajgrt of Gladbrook; one sister-in-law, Lillian Dostal of Clutier; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Fred, William, and Arthur Dostal; and one sister-in-law, Elaine (Otto) Dostal.
