During World War II, he worked at an aircraft factory in California. After moving back to Iowa, he farmed with his father.
On July 18, 1946, he was united in marriage to Reva Caster at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. He was also active in Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus, selling Christmas trees and Tootsie Rolls. He enjoyed fishing and traveling and spent a lot of his retirement traveling around the United States, and England, Scotland and Wales. It was also during retirement that he began woodworking. The Nativity Set used by the Toledo Fire Department each year was made by Ludwig.
