Obituary

TOLEDO-Lyle Ernest Campbell, age 77, of Toledo, died on July 21, 2007 at his home in Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 11 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo with military honors by Reinig-Friedrich American Legion Post #72 of Toledo. Visitation will be Monday, July 23, 2007 from 4 – 7:30 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service at 7:30 PM.
Lyle Campbell was born on January 10, 1930, on the family homestead, northwest of Toledo in the Bushy Ridge Community, the son of John Martin and Alwildia (Cramond) Campbell.
He attended Fairview Elementary School #5 and graduated from Toledo High School in 1947. He attended Fairview Methodist Church as a child.
Lyle served his country in the U.S. Army stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict.
On October 27, 1956, he was united in marriage to Geraldine "Gerry" McGrory at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Victor, Iowa. He was a retired rural mail carrier. Prior to that, he worked as a carpenter, first working with his father and uncle and later with Springer Lumber Co.
Lyle was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama and the Knights of Columbus. He was a fifty-year member and past commander of the Reinig-Friedrich American Legion Post #72 of Toledo. He served sixteen years as a volunteer with the Toledo Fire Department. He was a member of the Lions Club, a volunteer for meals-on-wheels, a member of Tama County I-Club, Tama-Toledo Country Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Tama, and National Rural Letters Carriers Association. He was a former Zoning Administrator for the City of Toledo and was a Little League Coach. Lyle's greatest enjoyment was his family and when he wasn't spending time with them, he was at home with a hammer in his hand in his workshop.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Charles (Dorothy) Campbell and Merle Campbell; his sisters, Charlotte (Arthur) Benn, Hildred (Russell) Emerson, and Grace (Harold) Henderson; former sister-in-law, Flossie Campbell; and two nephews, Keith Campbell and Don Benn.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Geraldine "Gerry" of Toledo; his children, Gary Campbell of Dubuque, Tom (Jane) Campbell of West Liberty, Catherine (Doug) Campbell Currier of Toledo, Rob Campbell of Hammonton, NJ, and Steve Campbell of Grimes; eight grandchildren, Grant Campbell of St. Paul, MN, Kyle Campbell of Milwaukee, WI, Colleen, Tim, Nick and Aaron Campbell of West Liberty, and Michael and Hannah Campbell of Grimes; one sister, Anne (Robert) Bane of Pleasantville, two former daughters-in-law, Becky Herrig of Dubuque and Lisa Campbell of Grimes; and many nieces and nephews.
