Obituary

TAMA-Marcella Hynek List, 96, of Tama passed away, Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama under the care of Iowa River Hospice. As per her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no services.
Marcella was born on April 2, 1915 in Linn County, Iowa, the second child of John Joseph and Barbara Rose (Crofter) Hynek. That was the year John Hynek, a Cedar Rapids newspaper reporter came to Tama to edit and publish The Tama News. Marcella grew with the knowledge of publishing the family weekly newspaper (later merged to The Tama News-Herald). She graduated from Tama High School in 1933 and took special courses to pursue a secretarial career, obtaining a Civil Service job with the U.S. Health Department in Washington, D.C. She married Robert J. List during World War II and continued living in the east. Marcella returned to office work at the Washington Star in the nation's capital as private secretary to the assistant business manager who planned the newspaper's new printing plant. She worked that job twelve years and the following ten years in the news department features office. She retired June 1, 1976 and the following year moved back to Tama, residing at 1600 Grant Street.
Survivors include her two children, Margaret Karanjai of Brooklyn, NY and John J. List of Chevy Chase, MD; three granddaughters, Andrea, Rebecca and Deborah. She had three sisters and one brother.
