Obituary

Marilyn Mae Hlas, 55, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael McAndrew as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Marilyn was born on February 12, 1968, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Marvin and Virginia (Wacha) Hlas.

Marilyn graduated from South Tama High School in 1986. In high school, she played flute in the band.

Marilyn worked as a CNA for twenty-five years at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. She was an avid Iowa State fan, watching football and basketball. She also followed NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt Jr. Marilyn loved her cats, Frisky and Fred. She enjoyed spending time with her niece and Goddaughter, Abby. Marilyn was on the transplant list and had a kidney transplant in November after suffering for years with Diabetes.

Survivors include her parents, Virginia (Bill) Safley of Tama and Marvin Hlas of Tama; her siblings, Doug (Marla) Hlas of Traer, Deb (Dan) Backen of Tama, Dan (Emily) Hlas of Toledo and Mike (Amanda) Hlas of Allison; her brother-in-law, Ed Haubach of Marshalltown; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents; and sister, Marsha Haubach.
