Toledo- Mary Elizabeth Weaver, age 95, a resident of Grandview Acres in Toledo, died Monday, August 7, 2006 at the center, under the care of Grinnell Regional Hospice, following a short illness.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2006 at 10:00 A.M. at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Charles Johnson, officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 10, 2006 at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Mary was born on July 25, 1911 in Montour, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary (Martin) Gary. In 1917, the family moved from the home where Mary was born to Toledo. She graduated from Toledo High School in 1928 and Grinnell College in 1932 where she majored in Speech and Drama. Following graduation she worked for a play company directing "Home Talent Plays." For four years she taught school. One year in a rural school and three years at Montour High School. It was during her last year that the new school was built with the best gym in Tama County. After her marriage to Roy Weaver on June 27, 1937 they made their home in Toledo. During World War II, she joined Roy in Norman, Oklahoma where he was stationed at a naval base. While there, she worked for the Navy and later in the Oklahoma University Library. Following World War II, they made their home in Marshalltown where twins Martin John and Mary Jean were born. In 1947, they moved back to Toledo. She was a member of the Toledo Library Board for many years. Those from her generation would remember her as the one who entertained the community with her readings and programs she directed. She was originally a member of the United Brethren Church, which eventually became a part of the United Methodist Church.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy in 1990, two brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include two children Jean (Al) Neas of Paso Robles, California, and John (Donna) Weaver of Chelsea; four grandchildren Tim (Natalie) and Matt (Courtney) Weaver, Christopher (Erin) Hull, M.D., and Andrea Hull; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
