Obituary

Max Riley Beck, 87, of Chelsea, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 29, 2013 from 4-6 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Max was born on August 3, 1926, in Toledo, Iowa, the son of Lester and Wayma (Alexander) Beck.
He graduated from Toledo High School.
Max served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On March 6, 1949, he was united in marriage to Doris Jean Kline in Gladbrook, Iowa. Max was a farmer in the Toledo and Chelsea area and also worked at Pioneer Seeds for a time. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Belle Plaine, American Legion and Farm Bureau. Max enjoyed dancing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Doris of Chelsea; four sons, Richard Beck of Topeka, KS, Thomas (Colleen) Beck of Bettendorf, Merlyn Beck of Ames, and Bruce (Yadira) Beck of Chelsea; two daughters, Marcia (Todd) Pedersen of Marion, and Tamara (Darren) Bennett of Grayson, GA; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ila Jean Bratton of Toledo, Lavonne Cherveny of Toledo, and Sherry Lathorp of IL; one brother, Timothy Beck of Toledo; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and one sister, Lorna McCord.
