TAMA- Rev. Maxine A. Plowman, age 95, a resident of Carrington Place in Toledo, formerly of Tama, died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at the care center due to a lengthy illness. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 24, 2008 at 10:30 AM, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Rev. LaVern Seth officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be Sunday, November 23, 2008 from 2-5 PM at the Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Maxine was born on September 21, 1913, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Aaron and Dorothy (Zigler) Armstrong.
She was ordained in 1946 and founded the Gospel Center that same year. Maxine also had a radio program as part of her ministry. She was a Practical Nurse and helped deliver many babies in the area. She was also a county juvenile counselor. Maxine also organized a Care program that donated items to areas over seas. She served in the Iowa Legislature for several terms and also served as a delegate for the Democratic Party. Maxine was also a longtime organizer in the area and helped to form the local Ministerial Association, B.P.W., and the Historical Society. Throughout her career, Maxine traveled to many church conventions held across the country. While she did lead a busy life, she always had time for her family. Maxine especially loved her role as mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Irvin in 1986; two brothers, George and Aaron Armstrong; two sisters, Gertrude Hamiel and Lola Tomlinson.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances (Wilmer) Twit of Cornville, AZ and Delight (Rondal) Callahan of Tama; one brother, Kenneth Armstrong of Mesa, AZ; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great granddaughters.
A memorial fund has been established.
