TAMA-Meredith Joan Jewell, age 79, of Tama passed away on Friday, December 21, 2012, at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Continuous Care Hospice. Funeral Services with Eastern Star Rites will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 1:30 PM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 from 5 - 8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. At Meredith's request, you are welcome to wear your favorite NFL attire (preferably green & gold).
Meredith was born on February 2, 1933 at Richland Center, WI to Raymond and Letha (Klousia) Kopps.
She attended country school at Ash Creek through the eighth grade and graduated in 1950 from Richland Center High School. She was employed in the office of J.C. Penney's and also as secretary at the high school.
On July 31, 1951 she married Dr. Harley Jewell at Tacoma, WA. Dr. Jewell was stationed with the US Army at Fort Lewis.
After Dr. Jewell was discharged from military service in January 1953 they and daughter Linda moved to Davenport, IA where he continued his chiropractic education. Meredith was employed as a secretary at Bendix Aviation.
In September 1955, Dr. and Mrs. Jewell and Linda moved to Toledo, IA where Dr. Jewell opened his chiropractic clinic.
Meredith was employed as an office manager and bookkeeper for her husband for forty-three and one-half years. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo and a sixty-one year member of Toledo Chapter #380 Order of Eastern Star of Tama, IA.
She enjoyed traveling, hunting, spending time at the casino and the Toledo Senior Center, time with her family and attending their many sports events, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. She was also a caregiver for her father for over eight years.
She is survived by five children, Linda (Tom) Townsend of Phoenix, AZ. Gordon (Cheryl) Jewell of Janesville, WI, Debbie (Darrell) Peska of Toledo, and twins, Mike Jewell of Toledo and Mark Jewell of Tama; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and eight step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Gary and her mother both in 1995, her husband on April 19, 2000 and her father on August 16, 2004.
A memorial fund has been established.
