Obituary

MONTOUR-Oris W. Hinegardner, age 87, of Montour, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at his home under the care of Iowa River Hospice following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 1:30 PM at the Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama with Pastor Jerry Avise-Rouse and Rev. Bobby Shomo officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Monday, April 26, 2010 from 5 - 8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Oris Wayne Hinegardner was born on January 1, 1923, in rural Montour, Iowa, the son of Willis and Anna (Spindler) Hinegardner.
He attended Montour school and graduated in 1939. A love of fishing and hunting began in his youth, as he grew up along the Iowa River. This was an interest that he sustained throughout his life.
In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II as a sniper in the 10th Mountain Division and saw extensive action in Italy. He married Jean Holmes of Montour on August 23, 1945, and completed his enlistment in Colorado and Texas.
In 1946, he and Jean began farming in rural Montour. His son, David, was born in 1947. A daughter, Betty, joined the family in 1954.
Oris and Jean were successful livestock and grain farmers and supplemented their income by a wide variety of endeavors including apple orchards, various pick-your-own fruit and vegetables acres, melons, grapes, pears, and other produce items. His son, David, is currently continuing the family business.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Oren and Arlo Hinegardner; and one sister, Orleen Waund.
Survivors include his wife, Jean of Montour; one son, David (Julie) Hinegardner of Montour; one daughter, Betty Santema of Montour; three grandchildren, Nova (Jerry) Ebersole and Jennifer Boliver of Montour and Jesse Hinegardner of Marion; several great-grandchildren, and many friends.
Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice and Montour Living Faith United Methodist Church.
