Patricia Y. (Papakee) Brown, 85, of Tama, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A Traditional Wake will be held Saturday evening, June 25, 2016 at the family home, 249 Meskwaki Road, on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama. Traditional Graveside Services will be held Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 2:00 PM at McIntosh Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker.
Patricia was born on April 26, 1931, on the Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama, the daughter of John K. and Grace (Morgan) Papakee. She attended Sac & Fox Day School, Tama High School, and Evangelical Nursing School. Patricia was united in marriage to Wilson Brown in April of 1951. She had worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse until her retirement. For many years, she was known as "Dr. Brown" of the settlement. Patricia loved reading and was an avid movie critic. After retirement, she enjoyed her time sewing so that she could dress herself and her family for the Powwow. Patricia enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She liked watching sports, especially football and basketball. Patricia was the #1 Chicago Bears fan. She was also a Betty Boop collector.
Survivors include four sons, Harlan (Henrietta) Brown, Kirby (Andrea) Brown, David Brown, and Patrick (Roberta) Whitefish all of Tama; four daughters, Vanessa Brown, Gia Brown-Bear, Marissa Brown, and Lisa Brown all of Tama; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Wilson Brown, son Craig Brown, three brothers, Reginald, Bernard, and Clyde Papakee; a sister Cecelia Wolfe; and two infant sisters.
