Dale served as Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from March 1941 until January 1946 during WWII.
After the war, Dale and Ruth returned to Montour and went into business with his parents in Avery's Grocery Store. He added a locker plant to the store and processed meat for many years. He sold the business in 1965 and went to work for Swift & Co. in Marshalltown, retiring in 1980.
He was active in the American Legion, always taking part in the firing squad at the Montour cemetery on Memorial Day and receiving fifty-year membership recognition. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge from the 1950's until the 1970's.
